I often skip over genealogies but one morning I read Matthew 1:1-17.
1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,
The names were familiar until I got to Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon and Salmon. I looked up one after another to realize that the Bible gives us more information about many of them.
This genealogy culminates in the life of Jesus who is called the Messiah. As I began to study each person listed, to my delight, I realized Matthew 1:1-17 provides a framework of people and therefore events beginning in Genesis 12 through the birth of Jesus. Using Jesus’ royal and legal genealogy as my foundation, I added other events to create an overview of the Old Testament. See pages 92-93 for Keys to Reading and Reading Suggestions.
